Theme

There are many themes in this book. The one that stuck out to me is taking responsibility for your own actions. The author had put this theme in the book because, many teenagers do not realize that some of their actions can reflect on them, unfortunately its not always good. It's important for teenagers to take responsibility for their actions because, it shows good character and signs of maturity.

Hannah Baker had an issue with this, she blamed 13 specific people on her suicide. There was one particular time when 1 of the 13 people could have took responsibility for their actions. There is one particular class that was favored by many students at Hannah's school called "Peer Communications". The teacher of that class, Mrs. Bradley, had a way with students that made it easy to communicate with her as well as, others. She designed a way for students to communicate with each other anonymously. Each student had a paper bag with their name on it, which was placed in the back of the room. If any student  had something to say to another student, then they would write an anonymous note and put it in that students bag. Well, there was one student who thought they were slick by taking Hannah's notes out of her bag. This person was Zach Dempsey, Hannah knew it was him and kept wondering "why?". She was mad because, everyone else in that class was getting notes except for her. She tried to confront him after she figured out that it was him taking her notes, but while she was confronting him, she got emotional.

Zach could have taken responsibility by admitting that he was taking her notes and gave them back, or he shouldn't have done it at all. If Zach hadn't taken Hannah's notes, then she would have reconsidered taking her life.
